No altar was built and no ritual performed before the vision came; Jacob simply stopped because the sun set, used a stone for a pillow, and slept. The ladder linking heaven and earth is Scripture's picture of a God who reaches the lowest point in a man's life uninvited, before that man does anything to deserve it.
